From Cottrell Trailers News Page

We are excited to introduce the latest in soft tie technology with our new, indented ratchet shaft. This innovative, patented design allows the operator to make width adjustments efficiently along the shaft. The pinch bar on top of the indention secures the strap as it rotates. Due to this change, we have been able to narrow the height of the box increasing load space. This original design is also lighter than our previous "Hex" shaft assembly. You will find this change on all new NextGen Cottrell equipment manufactured after May 2010.

Cottrell 4' jump skids

With a head rack, there is always the position behind the cab that needs to be loaded. These ramps will be what you drive over in order to load that position. In order to find out the length that is needed take a measure from the bottom front trailer position to the skid seats welded to your head rack. This will tell you what size is needed for the distance that you have to go in order to load this position. The skids will hold a vehicle. Cottrell 4 'Aluminum.

Car hauler dumps fuel and cars, closes I-70 for 9 hours

Zanesville Times Recorder
BY KATHY THOMPSON • Staff Writer • April 7, 2010

NEW CONCORD -- A nearly nine-hour closure of Interstate 70's westbound lanes on Tuesday was caused by a the rollover of a car hauler that dumped fuel and cars.

The accident happened around 8 a.m. and closed lanes until just before 5 p.m.

Lt. Mike Forshey, of the Ohio Highway Patrol Zanesville post, said Ronald H. Young Jr., 41, of East Greenville, Pa., was traveling west when he looked down at his GPS unit, and the hauler carrying nine vehicles slid into the guardrail, carrying the cab of the car hauler with it.

Three cars were ejected and rolled into the field, Forshey said, while the cab containing Young rolled over and landed on its roof.

"It was a mess," Forshey said.

Young was transported to Grant Medical Center in Columbus with a back injury. Young was not wearing a seat belt, Forshey said.

Young was employed by Hibsman Auto Group in Pennsylvania, according to Forshey.

Authorities with the Ohio Environmental Agency were called to the scene because not only was the car hauler leaking diesel fuel, but some of the cars were leaking fuel, said Dennis Deavers, an on-scene coordinator with the Environmental Protection Agency.

"Zemba Brothers of Zanesville was quick to respond to the scene, as well as fire fighting units from New Concord and the area, and they were able to contain the fuel pretty quick," Deavers said. "The leakage itself is pretty minor, but we have to clean it up before we can let traffic through."

The accident remains under investigation and charges are pending, Forshey said.

Peterbilt Launches the New PACCAR 2010 MX Engine

Bloomberg Business News
Business Wire 03/25/2010 6:47 PM ET

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Today, Peterbilt Motors Company announced the availability of the highly anticipated new Paccar MX engine for Class 8 vehicles at their press conference at the Mid-America Trucking Show. The PACCAR MX engine delivers design excellence and industry leading performance, reliability and fuel efficiency for Peterbilt’s Vocational and On-Highway lineup.

Beginning in summer 2010, the PACCAR MX will be available in Peterbilt Models 587, 388, 386, 384, 367 and 365. The PACCAR MX was designed, developed and tested to provide best-in-class performance for Peterbilt Class 8 vehicles through thorough engineering and vehicle optimization.

“The PACCAR MX leverages the corporation’s 50+ years of engine development and manufacturing expertise, over 50 million test miles and the over 125,000 PACCAR MX engines operating globally,” said Bill Jackson, Peterbilt General Manager and PACCAR Vice President. “The PACCAR MX takes our trucks to the next level of integration and optimization and the high degree of performance is synonymous with the Class and quality the industry has come to expect from Peterbilt.”

The PACCAR MX engine is available with a horsepower range of 380hp-485hp and torque outputs up to 1,750 lb-ft with a displacement of 12.9 liters. This power range, combined with excellent fuel efficiency, high reliability, durability, lightweight design and low cost of ownership makes it an ideal choice for both over-the-road and vocational applications. The PACCAR MX engine uses Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) in combination with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) to meet the EPA 2010 diesel engine emissions regulations.

The PACCAR MX is the only commercial diesel engine to use Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) in both the cylinder block and head. CGI is 20 percent lighter and 75 percent stronger than traditional gray iron. Additionally, the engine utilizes fractured cap technology in both the connecting rods and main bearing caps to provide high shearing strength that result in a wide horsepower range and longer torque and power curves for more efficient operation.

“Proper truck specification and component integration is critical in maximizing vehicle power and efficiency. The 2010 PACCAR MX provides the engineered optimal set of technologies that are specially designed to increase fuel economy and add savings to our customers’ bottom line,” said Landon Sproull, Peterbilt Chief Engineer. “Pairing Peterbilt’s proven aerodynamics with technologies, such as electronically controlled high pressure fuel injection, delivers unparalleled fuel economy and unmatched overall performance.”

Customer optimization can be achieved through PACCAR’s PROSPECTOR® sales specification tool which analyzes the application, intended use, payload, fuel efficiency and other factors to determine a best spec for each customer’s application.

“All Peterbilt dealers across the USA and Canada are able to target a customer’s best spec using PACCAR’s PROSPECTOR® to order their ultimate engine performance parameters,” said Arlen Savitt, Peterbilt’s Assistant General Manager of Sales and Marketing. “Peterbilt’s dealer network is ready to welcome customers to experience the PACCAR MX engine’s exceptional power and performance, and all dealer locations have been specially trained in MX sales and service support.”

The PACCAR MX has been designed for ease of maintenance, which results in improved efficiency in dealers’ service facilities. Peterbilt dealers are prepared to provide exceptional parts and service support for the PACCAR MX engine. Peterbilt and all PACCAR dealerships have certified PACCAR MX trained technicians and a complete inventory of service parts. More than 525 authorized service locations across North America are certified in the latest technologies and cutting edge diagnostic tools to service and support the PACCAR Engine family. Additionally, PACCAR operates eight parts distribution centers in North America and provides engine technical support 24/7 – 365 days a year.

Opinion: Shippers Should Put Safety First

By Paul Landry
President
British Columbia Trucking Association

In trucking parlance, a “shipper” is anyone, be it a business or an individual, that hires a truck to transport goods. A shipper may hire a truck for any of a variety of reasons: Perhaps there is a long distance to cover or the load requires more space than available in the trunk of a car. Or perhaps the trucking company has expertise in shipping goods across the Canadian/U.S. border or the border between the United States and Mexico.

Once a shipper decides to hire a trucking company, however, the primary factor that closes the deal — indeed, sometimes the only factor — is price.

I come across this situation time and again, so the following anecdote is typical: A shipper once demanded that I do something about a truck driver in his yard who had failed to back a trailer up to the loading bay after umpteen tries and 45 long minutes. The deed eventually was done by a more skilled driver from a rival trucking company, but my response to his demand that I do something about the situation was that this type of problem can be solved only by the shippers themselves.

Consider what this shipper had or had not done as the situation evolved outside his window. Did he call the trucking company to find out why it had dispatched an unqualified driver? For that matter, had he even checked the qualifications of the trucking company before hiring it in the first place?

NAFTA trade up 24% in February

By eTrucker Staff

Freight value remained 14.3 percent less than in February 2008.

Surface trade between the United States and Canada and Mexico was 24.1 percent higher in February than a year earlier, reaching $59.5 billion, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The 24.1 percent increase is the largest year-over-year rise on record but freight value remained 14.3 percent less than the value in February 2008.

BTS reported the value of U.S. surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico rose 4.9 percent in February from January. Month-to-month changes can be affected by seasonal variations and other factors.

U.S.-Canada surface transportation trade totaled $36.3 billion in February, up 21.7 percent from February 2009. U.S.-Mexico surface transportation trade totaled $23.2 billion in February, up 28 percent from February 2009.

Surface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline. In February, 87.6 percent of U.S. trade by value with Canada and Mexico moved on land.
